Questions about lessons
How old does a child have to be to start?
Most children start at seven or eight, when their hands can reach the neck of a guitar made for their size. Teens and adults can start at any age.
Do you teach in Spanish?
Yes. Candelario and Eulogio teach in Spanish or English, whichever you prefer, and the other teachers teach in English. Tell us your language when you book.
Do I need my own guitar?
You need a guitar at home to practice. Classical and flamenco use nylon strings; acoustic uses steel strings. Ask your teacher before you buy or rent one, and ask us about borrowing one for your first weeks.
What is a placement visit?
A short visit with one of our teachers. You play or talk about what you want to play, the teacher listens, and we match you with a teacher and a weekly time. Nobody is graded.
How long is a lesson?
Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, once a week. Children usually start with 30. Your teacher suggests a length at your placement visit.
Can a parent or grandparent sit in?
Yes. A parent or grandparent may sit in on any lesson, and we ask the family of the youngest students to stay for the first lessons.
Do students have to play at the guitar night?
No. Every student chooses, and many come first as part of the audience. Pieces can be played alone or in a group.
What if I miss a lesson?
A lesson you cancel with a day's notice is made up within the session. Read how make-ups work on the tuition page.
Can an adult start from nothing?
Yes. Many of our students are adults, and several started after sixty. Your teacher begins with what you want to play and moves at your pace.
How does tuition work?
The length of the lesson, the format and the teacher set it. We give you our figures in writing at your placement visit. The tuition page explains the rest.
