Styles we teach
Four styles, five teachers
Choose the sound you want to make. Your teacher fits the lessons to your age and to where you are now.
Classical guitar
Nylon strings, fingerstyle technique and a calm, unhurried pace. For children from seven, teens and grown-ups.
Ages 7 and up
With Candelario and Shiori
Flamenco guitar
Rhythm first: strumming patterns, the beat that holds the music together and a hand-percussion class to keep time.
Ages 10 and up
With Candelario and Eulogio
Latin guitar
Chords and rhythms from Mexico, the Caribbean and South America, played with others in the Saturday ensemble.
Ages 8 and up
With Eulogio and Nyree
Acoustic guitar
Open chords, strumming and songs you already know, on a steel-string guitar. A good first stop for teens and adults.
Ages 12 and up
With Rolf
What happens in a lesson
Lessons are 30, 45 or 60 minutes, once a week. Every lesson runs the same way, so you always know where you are.
- 01
Step 1: Warm up
Tune, stretch and play something you already know, so your hands arrive before your head does.
- 02
Step 2: New material
One idea at a time: shown, played slowly and then played together.
- 03
Step 3: A plan for the week
A short list of what to practice, written down, so you know what to do at home.
At home
What to have at home
A guitar in the right size for you or your child, a footstool and a tuner. Classical and flamenco use a nylon-string guitar, and acoustic uses steel strings. Ask your teacher before you buy or rent anything. We can tell you what to look for in a first guitar, and what the extras on the tuition page are for.
